The Confederate States of America - 13 southern states of the country, pro-slavers - used several flags during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The first, adopted in 1861 by the secessionist states, was the "Star and Bars", close to the American flag of the time. In 1863, it was replaced by the "Dixie Flag", to avoid confusion on the battlefields with the flag of the abolitionist states of the North.
