In 1763 France adopted a new infantry rifle more robust than the previous one to meet the requirements of online shooting tactics at an accelerated rate of fire, born of the unfortunate Seven Years' War. The new rifle was too heavy and was replaced after three years by the model 1766, developed under the direction of Mr. de Montbeillard, inspector of the Manufacture of St Etienne.
