The story of King Arthur is intimately linked to the magic and mysterious sword Excalibur, whose name means "Cut Steel", which was one of its many properties. There are several legends about how Arthur got this mythical sword; there are two versions that stand out from the others: the first speaks of Excalibur as the sword drawn from a rock by Arthur, and the second, as the sword entrusted to the young king by the Lady of the Lake.

In the first version, which tells of Geoffrey of Monmouth, it is said that the death of King Uther Pendragon, Merlin forged on the Isle of Avalon powerful Excalibur sword and buried on a steel anvil on a rock near the Cathedral of Saint - Paul; who could draw the sword from his bed, would be the legitimate king of England.
